Three values every site compares with the address

A proxy moves your address to another country and changes nothing else. The browser behind it still reports the clock, the language list and the locale of the machine it runs on, and those three values are the first things a site compares with the address. A German exit with a Jakarta clock and a Portuguese interface is not subtle; it is a connection whose parts were assembled from different places, and sites that score risk read it exactly that way. Getting the three values right is not difficult β€” the difficulty is knowing what right looks like for a country you have never set a computer up in.

That is what this page is for. Choose the country and it lists the IANA time zones people there actually live in β€” the representative one first, with the current offset and whether daylight saving is in effect β€” the language tags a local install carries, the navigator.languages list and Accept-Language header they produce, and a sample of how a date, a time and a number render in that locale. Then it reads this browser's own zone and language and says whether they fit. Everything comes from a static table and the Intl API in your browser; nothing is looked up and nothing is sent.

Time zone: representative versus exact

Most countries observe one zone, and for those the answer is a single name. For the countries that span several β€” the United States, Canada, Brazil, Russia, Australia, Mexico, Indonesia and a handful more β€” the page lists each zone and marks the representative one, which is the zone of the most populous region. Which one you should set depends on where the proxy's address is placed, not on the country as a whole: a Los Angeles exit with a New York clock is inside the same country and still three hours wrong. When your proxy provider states a city, use its zone; when it states only a country, the representative zone is the defensible default.

Language and Accept-Language

A browser carries an ordered language list, set from the operating system, and sends it on every request as Accept-Language with descending weights. The list a local install produces has a recognisable shape: the country's language with its region tag, then the bare language, and on most non-English installs an English fallback at the end β€” fr-FR, fr, en-US, en. The page builds that list and the header from the country's usual languages, with the English fallback switchable, because both shapes exist in the wild. Some countries have two or three common languages and the page shows each; pick the one that fits the rest of the profile.

Why these three values are the ones sites compare

Because they are cheap to read and hard to get accidentally right. The address is known from the connection, the zone from Intl.DateTimeFormat, the language from navigator.language and the Accept-Language header β€” no permission, no fingerprinting library, no delay. A real machine in a real country produces all three from one fact about where it is, so they agree without effort. A profile assembled by hand produces them separately, and any pair that disagrees is a signal that costs the site nothing to collect. Matching them is the floor, not the ceiling: it removes the cheapest tell, and the rest of the fingerprint still has to fit.

Which zone to pick, what the language header should look like, and why daylight saving is handled by the zone name.

The zone of the city the proxy is in, if the provider tells you. If it only says United States, America/New_York is the representative choice: it is the zone of the largest share of the population, so it is the least surprising default. What you should not do is leave the browser on your own zone. The country row on the IP lookup page will tell you where the address is actually placed.

The country's language with its region tag first, then the bare language with a lower weight, usually followed by English with lower weights still β€” for France, fr-FR,fr;q=0.9,en-US;q=0.8,en;q=0.7. The page builds it from the language tags it lists and lets you switch the English fallback off, since an install without one is also common.

Match both. The zone is compared with the address most often, but the language is compared with the zone, and an English interface on a Vietnamese connection with a Ho Chi Minh clock is a combination a site can still notice. Language is judged more gently than the clock β€” people travel and use English software everywhere β€” so it is a note rather than a contradiction, but it stacks with everything else.

The page lists them all with the representative one marked. Use the zone of the proxy's stated city; if you have only a country, use the representative zone. Setting a zone from the wrong side of the country is still inside the country, so it is a smaller mismatch than a foreign clock, but it is a mismatch a city-level lookup can see.

Only in that the browser has to observe it the way the zone does, and setting a named IANA zone handles that automatically β€” the offset shifts on the right dates. What breaks is setting a fixed offset instead of a zone: the profile then reports the wrong offset for half the year, and a site that checks January against July can tell. The page shows both offsets for each zone so you can see which ones move.

The table of zones and languages is static and shipped with the page; the offsets, daylight-saving state and locale samples are computed live by your browser's Intl API, which carries the current time zone database. Nothing is fetched. The one optional request is the detection of your own exit country, which uses the same edge lookup as the IP address tool and can be ignored.

Each profile's time zone, locale and language are set from the proxy's country when the profile is created, and they move with the proxy if it changes, so the three values a site compares first are never assembled by hand. This page is the manual version of that step, for when you are setting a profile up somewhere else.

How to read the table

The table describes what a machine bought and set up in a country most commonly reports. It is a starting point, not a rule: bilingual setups, English interfaces and laptops that have moved country are all real, and the page says usually where it means usually. Representative zones are the most populous region's zone, and a proxy placed elsewhere in a multi-zone country should use that place's zone instead. Nothing here is a rarity figure and nothing compares you with other visitors.
